Greetings MUSD Community and Happy New Year!
We are excited to welcome students back as we prepare for an amazing year ahead!
As we begin the second half of the school year, here are important 2026 laws affecting schools.
New 2026 Educational Laws:
AB 715: Creates a State of Civil Rights to help districts prevent discrimination and address related complaints.
AB 461: Ends the ability to jail parents for chronic truancy.
AB 3216 – Phone‑Free‑School Act: Requires districts to limit cellphone use during school hours.
AB 49 & AB 98: Strengthen protections for students affected by immigration enforcement.
AB 495 – Family Preparedness Plan Act: Expands which relatives can care for children if parents are detained or deported.
SB 640: Establishes direct admissions for eligible high school students to CSU campuses and promotes CSU dual‑admission pathways for community college students.
Attendance Matters:
We are working to improve attendance by 2 percentage points this year. Consistent attendance is essential for meaningful learning, and it also plays a critical role in maintaining fiscal stability that allows us to provide high‑quality programs, staffing, and resources for all students.
You can help by limiting avoidable absences.
Every day in class matters. When students are present, they learn more, stay connected, and build the habits that support long‑term success.
Enrollment Update:
Enrollment for the 2026-2027 school year is now open! The TK program is open for all children who are 4 years old on or before September 1st. Children who turn 5 years of age on or before September 1st are eligible for kindergarten. All enrollment is conducted online and more information about registration can be found on the district website.

MUSD Governing Board Budget Workshop:
The MUSD Governing Board will hold a Budget Workshop on Thursday, January 8, at 2:00 p.m. in the Boardroom. All community members are invited to attend.

Respectfully,
Gigi F. Patrick, Ed.D.
